How It Works
In student mode, changes you make to the student's plan in your dashboard are never visible to the student unless you use Plan Sharing.
How to tell Plan Sharing is enabled for your organization
When Plan Sharing is enabled, if you hover your cursor over the rocket icon for a student in student mode, you should see an updated tooltip with commentary mentioning your changes to the student's plan will not be saved unless you share your changes.
Similar commentary is also mentioned by the students name after opening a student's plan
Lastly, after running a plan for a student in student mode, you should see a new button in the top right corner labeled "Share".
How To Share Plans
First open a student's plan by clicking the rocket icon by their name. Make changes to their school list or academic profile. When you're done, click the Run Kickstart button to run their plan.
After the run is finished, you should see a button labeled “Share” in the top right corner. You can make changes and run plans as many times as you need. Once you’ve finalized changes to that student’s plan, you can click the “Share” button.
When a plan is shared, College Kickstart captures the changes and gives you the ability to add some commentary to explain what you changed and why you made modifications. When you're ready, click the button labeled "Share" to confirm your changes.
Once shared, the plan will be saved as a run for the student. The student will be notified in their dashboard that a change has been made, along with the commentary you provided.
Student's View
After you share your changes, the student will see a red alert banner on their dashboard.
After clicking the "details" link, the Counselor Changes modal will open for the student. It will include your changes and any commentary you shared.
The red alert will be dismissed after the student runs their plan.
Important Notes
Student and Counselor Updating the Same Plan
The plan sharing button will be disabled for a student if they ran their plan within 15 minutes of your attempt to share a change. This is to help minimize confusion and avoid plan sharing while the student is logged in and actively updating their plan. The button will be re-enabled after you close the Kickstart modal and come back to the student's plan 15 minutes after the student's last run.
Multiple Counselors Updating the Same Plan
Plan sharing will be temporarily disabled for a student if a different counselor is updating the student's plan, such as counselor adjustments, updating academic profile, or if a different counselor confirmed sharing a plan first before you did. If a different counselor updated a student, you do not have to wait 15 minutes for the button to be re-enabled. The button will be re-enabled after you refresh the Counselor Dashboard and try sharing changes for the same student again. This is to ensure you always get the student's latest plan before sharing your changes. Note that the student will only see their latest plan. This means if plans are shared multiple times to the same student, the student will see the latest one that was shared with them.
Multiple Tabs To Share Plans For Multiple Students
We do not recommend using our application in multiple tabs to avoid potential issues. The same goes for this feature. Please refrain from running and sharing plans for multiple students at the same time to avoid issues, and always review the plan you want to share with the student before confirming your changes.
Freezing Plans
*Note that the Freeze List setting is only relevant for high schools and large practice solutions
If you have both Plan Sharing and the Freeze List setting enabled, note that all red alerts from sharing plans will be dismissed from student dashboards after the freeze date is reached or passed. The red alert will be replaced with the blue alert stating that lists are frozen.
Students can still login and see all 4 views based on the latest plan you shared, but they will not see any shared commentary that was not yet dismissed by the student. You can make changes to student plans, regardless of account ownership, once plans are frozen.
Student-Powered Sample Students
*Note that sample students are only relevant for high schools
If you share plan changes to your student-powered sample student, changes to the plan will be saved, and you will see the latest plan you shared if you login as the sample student, but please note that the red alert in the student dashboard will not appear. Given that sample students are not 'real students', you will not see the red alert nor any commentary you shared to the student-powered sample student.
How To Get Started
Plan Sharing is enabled for all practices and high schools by default. If you would like to opt out of this feature, please contact your relationship manager to disable this feature for your high school or practice.
